We don't expect our own 18-year-olds to be fully ready to live independently—they're still learning to navigate adulthood with family support, resources, and safety nets. So why do we expect foster youth, many of whom have experienced profound trauma, abuse, and instability, to instantly succeed the moment they turn 18?

But hunger isn't just about a lack of food—it's about time poverty, housing instability, healthcare gaps, limited education, and blocked economic opportunity. When you're working multiple jobs to survive, you don't have time to cook nutritious meals, attend job training, or advocate for better wages.

The threat isn't who most parents think it is. Over 70% of child sexual abuse cases involve another child or teen as the perpetrator—not strangers, not adults online, but classmates, teammates, and former romantic partners. And technology has weaponized peer harm in devastating new ways.

The immigration detention crisis has reached a breaking point, and children are suffering the most. This situation extends beyond immigration policy; it represents a humanitarian crisis impacting children in our neighborhoods and schools. U.S. citizen children are being separated from their parents, families are being torn apart by detention, and the system is lacking in basic humanity and accountability.
